The Patton volleyball team collected its second straight-sets win over crosstown rival Freedom this season, earning a victory at home in Morganton on Thursday, 25-14, 25-17, 28-26.
PHS had previously topped FHS 2-0 during the Burke County Volleyball Jamboree.
Offensive leaders for the Lady Panthers (8-2) included Anna Lynn Ripley (13 kills, ace, assist), Reece Edwards (12 kills), Hannah Huggins (10 kills, two assists), Soraya Hartman (eight kills, two assists), Abigail Carpenter (two kills, three aces, 23 assists), Jolann Buff (kill, ace), Chesney Hensley (kill), Carly Setterlind (ace, four assists), Emma Griffin (eight assists) and Kate Clark (three assists).
On the defensive side, Patton was led by Setterlind (15 digs, 29 receptions), Carpenter (four digs), Buff (four digs, three receptions), Ripley (three digs, 12 receptions), Griffin (two digs), Huggins (two digs, six blocks, reception), Clark (two digs, two blocks, two receptions), Edwards (dig, three receptions), Hartman (dig, five blocks, two receptions), Kynzlee Worley (block) and Kayla Morris (reception).

The Lady Patriots (2-7) were led by Kaitlyn Hagmann (nine kills, two aces), Ava Whitaker (four kills, two blocks), Mia Furches (two kills, four blocks), Madelyn LeMasters (kill, ace), Katie Settle (kill) and Emma Buchanan (ace).

The Lady Wildcats (6-3, 1-0 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conf.) won their conference-opener in four sets at home in Valdese on Thursday, 25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 25-19.

The Lady Cavaliers (3-5, 0-2 Catawba Valley 2A Conf.) were swept in conference play on the road in Catawba on Thursday, 25-10, 25-12, 25-18.
Leading the EBHS offense were Karlie Chester (three kills), Raegan Carter (three kills), Kyndal Morrison (two kills), Hayden Lowman (kill, ace), Amanda McLean (kill), Ashaunah Reinhardt-Phillips (kill, ace) and Addy Fortenberry (ace, 11 assists).

NCSSM-Morganton 9, Avery County 0
The Lady Dragons (3-0, 2-0 WHC) continued their unblemished start to the season with a shutout conference victory at home in Morganton on Wednesday.
NCSSM-Morganton earned singles wins with No. 1 Manya Nallagangu 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Will Levine 6-0, 6-0; No. 3 Ananya Sriram 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Kirsten Boyd 6-1, 6-0; No. 5 Gina Byon 6-0, 6-0; and No. 6 Savannah McDonnell 6-0, 6-0.
The hosts’ doubles victories came from No. 1 Levine/McDonnell 8-3, No. 2 Byon/Boyd 8-0, and No. 3 Sriram/Ria Raamesh 8-0.
South Caldwell 9, Patton 0

BOYS SOCCER
Pine Lake Prep 3, Patton 2
The Panthers (6-2) were dealt a narrow nonconference loss on the road in Mooresville on Thursday, battling to a 2-2 halftime tie before the host Pride scored the lone second-half goal after being awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
“(It was) our best game so far this season,” said PHS coach Keith Scott. “We outworked Pine Lake Prep for the majority of the game.”
PHS got on the scoreboard first when Abraham Miguel scored off an assist from Jimmy Monzon. After falling behind 2-1, Patton used a 37th-minute goal from David Bernabe from 30 yards out to create the halftime stalemate. Aldair Pinto, Noah Krogel and Josue Yax controlled the midfield for the Panthers, who were led up top by Bernabe and Miguel and on defense by Jacob Batz, Gabe Batz, Gabino Vasquez, Allen Morales and goalkeepers Colsyn Queen (three first-half saves), and Isai Jimenez (two second-half saves).
The visitors outshot Pine Lake Prep 12-10.
Piedmont Community Charter 3, NCSSM-Morganton 1
The Dragons (2-2) slipped to .500 overall with a nonconference loss in Gastonia on Thursday.
Jai Yalla had the lone goal of the contest for the visitors.
JV FOOTBALL
Freedom 22, East Burke 0
The JV Patriots (2-0) earned a shutout Thin Thursday victory over the JV Cavaliers (0-2) on the road in Icard on Thursday, scoring all of their points in the first half.
Si Perkins scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, one from 70 yards out and another from 26 yards out. Freedom quarterback Ryder Huffman tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Noah Francis.
Jesiah Rees (14-102) and Tucker Gantt (3-21) led the ground attack for EBHS. Nathan Martin went 1 of 7 through the air for 23 yards, connecting with Tyler Brown on the lone completion. The EB defense was led by Leelan Pyatte (six tackles), Jaxson Wiley (five tackles, two tackles for loss, fumble recovery), Cayson Mooneyham (four tackles, three tackles for loss), Brown (three tackles) and Cash Wittenberg (three tackles).
