OUTER LOOP Pond. 265 Creek POND CREEK Fishpool PRESTON CENTRAL Creek HIGHWAY 265 ROAD STONESTREET COUNTY Louisville JEFFERSON COUNTY 65 JEFFERSON Area Enlarged STAFF MAP BY JOANNE MESHEW Flood-control plan unveiled for southern Jefferson County The Army Corps of Engineers unveiled preliminary plans yesterday to relieve flooding problems plaguing southern Jefferson County but estimated the task would cost nearly $25 million and take until 1998. The corps and the Metropolitan Sewer District also announced they would split costs for the project, called the Pond Creek Watershed a 71-squaremile area that extends from Fern Creek through southwestern Jefferson County. Corps officials unveiled the plans during a meeting with representatives from four neighborhood groups and local officials at MSD's office.
The project is a result of a 12- month study the corps conducted to determine the extent of flooding problems in the Louisville metropolitan and Southern Indiana areas. Corps officials said southern Jefferson County is targeted for improvements because of the magnitude of flooding problems there. The corps estimates the improvements along Pond Creek could reduce the area's flood damage by nearly 90 percent and save more than $4.6 million per year in property damages. "This is not a panacea, but it should help," said Sharon Bond, a corps regional economist. The study is to be reviewed next month by local agencies and neighborhood groups.
The next steps will be to secure federal funding, complete a feasibility study and obtain congressional approval, which could take up to 34 months, Bond said. If the project proceeds according to plan, engineering and design work could be completed by 1995 and construction could begin in 1996.
