Broad St. (near Sloan's Cycle Shop) 890-4264 Veterans support (Continued from page 1B) when you consider inadequate VA funding has left the hospital understaffed." Monday's show of veterans' support came from as near as Murfreesboro and as far away as Chattanooga and Jamestown. Manchester veteran Larry Trail spoke emotionally from his wheelchair as he pleaded with Gober to maintain the current level of medical care at York VA as opposed to transferring the hospital's surgical department to Nashville VA. "When I can get in, I get the best of your people loose with adequate funding and staff," said Trail. "I'm in almost constant pain from injuries I received to my spine from a land mine in Vietnam.

And it took months and months to get the needed surgery at Nashville. But if the staff at York is given the funds and the staff, they will be just fine. Turn your people loose." Trail's voice trailed off as he wheeled himself away from the podium to talk with reporters about former treatment he received at the Nashville VA. "I'm sitting in this wheelchair today for more than five hours to get to speak to Mr. Gober," Trail said.

"At Nashville, I was 25th in line, in terrible pain, and the line was moving it had taken a long time, many months, to just get into the line to get examined. The line was so long that I don't know how many, who were worse off than me, were behind me. "I begged for back surgery from April to the next the pain is so severe sometimes that I just sit in my wheelchair and my blood pressure shoots up over 180 and this is triggered by the pain because my doctor cannot get my medicine to me that he and I know I need," said Trail. "And getting medicine sent to me by the VA through the well, maybe it will come and maybe it won't, which is catastrophic for my pain," Trail said. "My doctor has to beg for my medicine.

And the doctors in Nashville are already so overwhelmed with patients, I don't know how the VA can expect more of them in Nashville when they're already over-burdened to the point of obscenity. "And let me make the point, the American people do not want our VA medical services cut that we were promised on the front end of serving our nation in time of war. Ask the people. Tell the politicians to fund the VA. The American people don't want our medical services cut." La Vergne (Continued from page 1B) $2,500 surcharge.

A separate and more direct connection, under construction directly from the Murfreesboro Water Plant on Stones River to the lake, will give the city a more dependable alternative source by this time next year, Kirchner said. Though the line is installed, the lake intake and a remaining 2,000 feet of line remains to be completed. The city will bid the remaining construction Sept. 14 and completion will require about a year.

"By this time next year," Kirchner said, "we should be able to get water out of the lake." The last time emergency conservation measures were declared was the 1988 drought, Kirchner said. The director insisted that even in the absence of official restrictions, users should conserve. "That's for two reasons," he said. "One, we don't want to increase our demand, and second, we want to conserve the water resources we have. Anytime we get in a situation like this, everyone should conserve." Public fund (Continued from page 18) growing university population, Walker said efforts must continue to obtain funding for a new science building and art building to replace the current structures.

"I committed to the construction of these facilities, and I will work diligently to secure funding," Walker said. Although both were designated as high priorities a year ago when funding requests were made to the Tennessee Board of Regents the science building ranked third and the art building sixth out of 85 projects presented to the TBR no capital projects were funded. Duane Stuckey, MTSU vice president of finance and administration, said the ability to obtain funding this year "depends on any reforms in revenue collection that might be implemented by the (state) Legislature" during the coming session. Walker addressed that issue during his speech. "For the first time in decades, it appears as if the Legislature will give serious attention to revenue reform," Walker said.

"This is potential good news for higher education since there are strong indications that if revenue reform does indeed come to pass, higher education is likely to receive the increased financial resources it so desperately needs," he said. But with the recent lack of government funding in mind, Walker said MTSU can't rely solely on state funds. Instead it must also build on external funding, he said, like the current $30 million fund-raising campaign that's above the $23 million mark. "The percent of alumni who give to the university is at an all-time high, and we intend to continue improvement in this area," he said. Concluding his address, Walker said, "The opportunities are boundless.

The challenges are opportunities of the future. "Let's set the stage for the next millennium." If one of those challenges includes lack of funds from state budget problems, Stuckey said no contingency plans have been formed for dealing with such a scenario. NEVER PAINT AGAIN!
